NEUSTART – ins Leere?

Author: Elisabeth Luft

Also an interview with "Barbarians Barbies - A Wild Women Circus" at the Flottmann-Hallen Herne.

Vulnerability on stage - how contemporary circus touches body and soul

Circus artists often go to their limits on stage and sometimes even beyond. If they are not careful enough, they can quickly injure themselves. Performers not only have to take care of their bodies, but also of themselves as personalities, which can also get hurt on stage. How this can happen and what motivates artists to be vulnerable on stage, you can hear now in a contribution by Isabelle Stier.

Time travel: fifty years of contemporary circus in Germany
From horses, magic tricks and red clown noses to dance, acrobatics and new media: the history of contemporary circus in Germany is colorful. What appears to be linear, however, is not a clear and straightforward development, but rather a juxtaposition of different art forms to this day. We look at the history of contemporary circus in Germany from the 1970s until today. Who were the pioneers and how has the genre developed? What constitutes contemporary circus forms today, what about training opportunities and what are the expectations for new generations?

Interview: Benjamin Richter
Daan Mackel talks to Benjamin Richter about object manipulation, his career and what it means to him to be an artist. Benjamin Richter has been active for many years as a juggler, dancer, artist and lecturer. As one of the pioneers of contemporary circus, he combines juggling, dance and object manipulation into an art form that blurs the boundaries between contemporary circus and installation.

Women* in contemporary circus

Yolande Sommer and Jana Korb are interviewed by Serafin Dinges about current positions and perceptions of women* in contemporary circus. The female artists talk about their own experiences, thoughts and research topics. Yolande Sommer is represented in the program of Zeit für Zirkus with the production "3xEva", which deals with images of women and the body in circus. The new piece "Swinging Stones and Bodies" by Jana Korb deals with a similar topic: body norms and to what extent the circus reproduces them. Jana Korb has been an aerial artist for many years and is a cultural scientist, artist and performer in search of feminist agency. She is leading a workshop on contemporary aerial acrobatics in Leipzig as part of Zeit für Zirkus

New constraint and technical screw: the term "innovation" in contemporary circus
The term "innovation" has the charm of an instruction manual. After all, must art constantly reinvent itself in order to be valid? It is often used to describe contemporary circus, still relatively unknown as an art form in Germany. But is there no other way to describe the current references and poetic inferences that constitute it? Janina Benduski, Tim Behren, Elena Kreusch and Arne Mannott talk about the aspects of a term that many artists find unfortunate.
