About Out Of Chaos

Following the debut of their new show, The Mirror, in the second part of their residency, Gravity & Other Myths bring their acclaimed production Out Of Chaos back to the Chamäleon stage.

Hard-edged acrobatics that reference birth and primordial physics collide with intimate verbal confessions and insights into what it feels like to be on stage in real time. By exposing the inner workings of their world-class acrobats, the company unveils the magic that is inherent in any work of Gravity & Other Myths: genuine warmth and connection between the performers and the audience.

At its conceptual centre, it is a story of how things come together. People, planets and plans. Movement and stillness. Audience, performer, sound and light. With great sincerity, eight acrobats together with a musician create exhilarating images and move with agility between chaotic creation stories and our seemingly ordered understanding of the here and now.

About Gravity & Other Myths

Gravity & Other Myths is an acrobatics and physical theatre company pushing the boundaries of new circus. Through a series of disarmingly accomplished ensemble works, GOM has evolved to become an established and respected Australian company, challenging the ecology of new circus through conceptual sophistication and acrobatic virtuosity while nurturing human connection.

Formed in 2009 by a group of young Adelaide artists with a passion for circus and physical theatre, the past 12 years have seen GOM successfully consolidate a meteoric introduction to the arts sector through steady growth, six critically acclaimed works and broad global success having toured to 37 countries with a collective attendance in excess of 750,000. The circus industry, the wider arts community and audiences worldwide have embraced the unique playfulness, honesty and physical mastery in the company’s work.

A Simple Space, our first work, has achieved huge international success, receiving multiple awards and having performed over 1000 times across 34 countries. GOM’s subsequent work, Backbone, has been touring for the past 5 years receiving awards (including 3 Helpmann award nominations) and critical acclaim worldwide. Out Of Chaos premiered in the 2019 Adelaide Festival, receiving the 2019 Helpmann Award for Best Physical Theatre. Out Of Chaos performed at the Chamäleon from August 2019 until February 2020.

Due to travel restrictions, GOM based themselves in their hometown of Adelaide throughout 2020/2021. This has allowed them the unexpected opportunity to invest in the creation of new work with the aim to diversify their current portfolio, while enabling them the time to reconnect with South Australian audiences.

About Chamäleon Berlin

Chamäleon Berlin is a creative venue, network partner and stage for contemporary circus. Their mission is to support circus artists in their artistic work, to promote the sustainable development of the art form and to present contemporary circus to a broad audience.

Under the artistic direction of Anke Politz and the management of Hendrik Frobel, the Chamäleon focuses on three main areas:

The Chamäleon stage is the starting and anchor point of the theatre. The pieces in its stage program are often co-produced and celebrate their world premiere in Berlin. In addition, they supplement its program with occasional guest performances and open our house to Berlin’s independent scene through open-stage formats or work-in-progress presentations.

Another focus lies in the area of creation: As a producer and creation platform, the Chamäleon promotes the development of new productions on and beyond our own theatre stage. Their aim is to support innovative artistic concepts and to establish sustainable structures that conceive of creation in circus as a holistic process and take the needs of the artists into account.

In addition, the Chamäleon offers circus artists a safe space to work on artistic projects with open-ended outcomes in the form of residencies. A final performance on their theatre stage is possible, but not a requirement. Making our facilities and skills available is intended to encourage artistic debate and create space for research, experimentation, and the development of ideas.
