Marion Sparber: Big boys don´t cry… but when they do?
Big boys don’t cry is an interdisciplinary dance theatre performance that questions the traditional image of masculinity in a sarcastic and theatrical way. It explores questions such as “What does it mean to be a man?” and “What are the effects of education, emancipation and equality on masculinity?” through the interplay between dance, circus and live-music. Six men of different nationalities examine behaviour, expectations and traditions. Inspired by stereotypical movement patterns, the social roles of men are tested and represented within a variety of dynamics. The performers provoke and challenge the audience by abruptly switching between movement qualities, characters and emotions. Impressive movement material and recognisable mood swings arouse the audience’s attention. Blind trust, intense physical exertion and perfect collaboration between the actors dominate Marion’s choreographies. The contrast between non-verbal and verbal body language catapults her pieces into a new, rarely explored dimension of contemporary art.

About the Location

Holzmarkt 25 is a cooperative cultural quarter in the heart of Berlin, on the banks of the Spree River. The project emerged from the interim cultural use of a former brownfield site and is now one of the most important locations for Berlin's creative scene. The site, which covers more than 12,000 square meters, features a concert hall, club, artists' hall, daycare center, restaurants, studios and, above all, plenty of green open space on the waterfront. Numerous artists, filmmakers, creative industry companies and small businesses have settled around the marketplace of the "urban village". The Holzmarkt is internationally regarded as a reference for successful user-driven urban development.
The "Säälchen" on the Holzmarkt is the place for events. The 350 sqm multifunctional event location is a permanent address in Berlin's cultural landscape. Concerts, theater, film premieres and conferences regularly take place in the large hall.
